Oliver grew up near the rugged northern Californian coast. Places like Stinson Beach and Mt. Tamalpais became familiar backdrops for his youthful adventure. Adventure has been a constant theme in Colby’s lifestyle, taking him over boarders and across oceans.

Propelled by an early experience in editing, Colby pursued an education at San Diego State University. Immersion in the filmmaking process allowed Colby to clearly see his passion was in cinematography.
Oliver left SDSU with an offer to operate camera for the San Diego Padres in-house crew. Hard work, skillful operating, and an easy-going attitude opened doors for Oliver in the world on sports broadcast television. He operated camera for Fox-Sports and ESPN.

The American Film Institute invited Colby to join the ’09 incoming class of 28 internationally selected cinematographers. 2 years later, the challenging and comprehensive schedule successfully installed Colby with a story-driven approach to his cinematography.

In 2012, Colby shot the dramatic thriller ‘Ice Scream‘ for Little Studio Films. The opportunity came after camera-operating indy-features and shooting 2nd Unit for several ASC cinematographers.
